We can only start where we are, in honesty coming to God, asking him to forgive us. God's enemy, Satan, is our enemy too, and just as he has from the beginning, he does whatever he can to keep us stuck in shame. That's what he did with Adam and Eve. There they were hiding from God. But God came looking for them, walking in the garden, calling them and saying, "Where are you?" He wanted them to come out of hiding and back into relationship with him. Tell your friend that's what God wants, that she can go to him. He hates sin, but he is saddened when it keeps us from him. He forgives, heals, and then strengthens us to be stronger in the journey. If your friend struggles with something that takes her back into the traps that keep her from God, encourage her to connect with someone who knows God well, who can encourage her and help her also know him well. The Live Free Journey, Small Group Study that came out this fall is also helpful on an individual or one-on-one basis-- guiding someone in a journey closer and closer to God and in living free like Jesus meant it.
